Frenchman accused of assaulting over 300 Indonesian children dies after suicide attempt – National

A French citizen who was recently arrested for assaulting more than 300 children died Sunday evening following a reported suicide attempt while in detention in Jakarta, police said.

Jakarta Police Spokesman Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said an officer patrolling the detention center last week found Francois “Frans” Camille Abello lying weak with a cable tied around his neck Thursday evening.

“[Frans] attempted suicide using cable, ”Yusri told reporters on Monday.

He was immediately transferred to Kramat Jati Police Hospital in east Jakarta, where he spent three days undergoing medical treatment before dying on Sunday night around 8 p.m., Yusri said.

Frans, a 65-year-old pensioner, was arrested last month at a hotel in Taman Sari neighborhood, west Jakarta, where police found two underage girls in his room with vibrators.

He has reportedly assaulted at least 305 Indonesian minors over the years, most of whom were street children, although police believe there may have been more victims. Authorities have so far identified at least 17 victims, aged 10 to 17.

According to police, Frans used to lure his victims by approaching them on the street and offering them work as role models. He then took his victims to his hotel room, took their photos and assaulted them. Those who refused to have sex with him were physically assaulted.

The suspect also installed a hidden camera in the room to record his sexual activity with the children.

Upon his arrest, police confiscated a laptop computer used to store tapes – on which police found at least 305 tapes of different victims – 21 clothes worn by victims, six memory cards, 20 contraceptives, two vibrators. and six cameras.

Frans faced the death penalty, a minimum of 10 years or a maximum of 20 years in prison under the Child Protection Act. (afr)
