KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Human Resources, through the Social Security Organization (Socso), extended its social protection coverage to domestic workers as of June 1.
Socso General Manager Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said that this extension, under the 1969 Employee Social Security Act (Act 4) and the 2017 Social Security Act Employment Insurance (Law 800), would allow domestic workers who were not previously covered by Social Security coverage now enjoy the same protection as workers in other sectors.
He said domestic workers included maids, drivers or bodyguards, gardeners, home security guards, cooks, babysitters, caregivers for the elderly or patients, helpers. or people employed in connection with private residences.
Azman said some 104,400 domestic workers involving 15,000 workers with citizenship and permanent resident status, as well as 89,400 foreign workers, are expected to benefit from the initiative.
“The role of domestic workers in households is seen as increasingly important with educational institutions such as schools, kindergartens and day care centers ordered to temporarily close in accordance with the movement control order.” , he said yesterday at a virtual press conference.
He added that domestic workers with citizenship, permanent resident and temporary resident status were covered by Law 4 and Law 800, while foreign domestic workers were covered by Law 4 only.
